Is Raw food safe?
Yes, it’s totally safe. At Puerto Raw, we use only fresh, human-grade ingredients from USDA-inspected farms—just like the food you'd eat yourself. Every ingredient goes through a special safety process to make sure it’s clean and free of harmful bacteria.
We also work with trusted suppliers, grass fed farms, and leading vets to make sure your dog’s food is not only safe, but the healthiest it can be. You can feel confident knowing your dog is getting clean, high-quality nutrition.
Do I need to worry about salmonella in raw dog food?
All of our meat at Puerto Raw is human-grade and comes from USDA-inspected facilities, the same standards used for food people eat. Every ingredient goes through a careful safety process before it reaches your dog’s bowl.
When it comes to salmonella, the facts might surprise you: studies and FDA recall data have shown more salmonella outbreaks have come from processed kibble than raw food. Kibble factories often deal with cross-contamination and large-scale storage issues, while raw diets like ours are made fresh and handled with care.
Plus, dogs are built for raw. Their short, acidic digestive tracts are designed to handle bacteria like salmonella without getting sick—something many holistic vets emphasize. So no, you don’t need to worry when feeding Puerto Raw. Just handle it like you would any raw meat in your kitchen: clean hands, clean bowls, and proper storage.
What if my dog is a picky eater?
Great question. Most picky dogs actually love raw food once they try it, because it smells and tastes like real food, not processed pellets or canned food. At Puerto Raw, we use fresh, high-quality meats and natural ingredients that dogs instinctively crave.
If your pup’s hesitant at first, that’s normal. Transitioning to raw is a big upgrade, and some dogs need a few days to adjust. You can start by mixing a little raw food into their current meals, or lightly searing it to enhance the aroma. Once they realize it’s the real deal, most dogs dive in with excitement.
How much will it cost?
On average, our food will cost $5-8 / day for a 25lb dog depending on your dog's activity level.
Can I cook your food?
Yes, serving raw is healthier, but you can gently cook our recipes. For best results, we suggest gently sautéing over low-medium heat for 3-5 minutes or only until it's just starting to brown. A little bit of pink is totally okay! Make sure to feed any liquid that is cooked out with the feed to ensure you're keeping the nutrients!
Why should I feed fresh real food?
We believe there’s a big difference between surviving and thriving. As pet obesity, cancer, and diabetes rise at alarming rates, there is a growing body of scientific evidence that points to the health benefits of a raw real food diet, and to the dangers of many commercial pet food manufacturing processes. We believe pet food should be…food. Not burnt brown balls.
Why is raw dog food better than cooked dog food?
When we cook meat, we accidentally destroy lots of the good stuff inside it - like vitamins that keep dogs healthy and special helpers called enzymes that make food easier to digest. It's like how cooked vegetables get mushy and lose their bright colors - they lose some of their power too!

Dogs have super strong stomach acid - way stronger than ours - that's made to handle raw meat safely. Their bodies know exactly what to do with raw food because that's what they were designed to eat, just like how rabbits are designed to eat carrots and grass.
